Exploring concepts of Cancer Biology and Genetic Engineering including the CRISPR/Cas9 system and associated data analytics part of a finished drug product
Foundational knowledge on research techniques like ELISA, Flow Cytometry, cell culture, and data analysis as well concepts involving Immunology, cancer biology, and genetic engineering techniques are crucial in the biotech industry for scientific researchers. It enables students to meet the expectations of entry level jobs but also allows for a smooth transition from academia to industry. In this Build Project, you will wear the hat of a scientific researcher trying to develop an analytical method to help understand different drug product characteristics. You will explore the practical applications of analytical methods such as flow cytometry and co-culture assays, while also learning to use data analysis software like FlowJo and GraphPad Prism. These tools, widely used in the industry, are essential for interpreting data that informs critical decisions in drug development. The aim is to equip you with the necessary tools to develop your own analytical approach for evaluating various drug parameters while introducing you to the many different opportunities the biotech industry has to offer!
Understand principles of Cancer Cell Biology, Disease Models, and Immunotherapy
Use industry standard software like FlowJo and GraphPad Prism to perform data analysis
Understand the principles of analytical methods like ELISA, Flow Cytometry, and Cell Culture and their applications in industry specific functions
Get to know the Build Fellow and other students, ask questions of the scope of the project, and a quick overview of Principles of Immunology
Introduction to immune cells and metabolic pathways involved in cancer cell biology
Discover the CRISPR/Cas9 system and how it has revolutionized cancer therapies, while also being introduced to other genetic engineering techniques
Introduction to techniques like ELISA, PCR, Western Blotting, and Absorbance
Understand the principles of flow cytometry and related concepts like cell markers, fluorophores, and cell sorting
Introduction to FlowJo software along with a demo to perform data analysis and interpretation
Introduction to cellular co-culture assays and data analysis using GraphPad Prism
Present your project to the Build Fellow and other students in the final group session. Opportunity to present your knowledge on the course fundamentals
A solid foundation in cellular biology, along with an understanding of cell signaling pathways, signal transduction, cellular metabolism, and cellular stress responses.
Strong fundamental understanding of the central dogma ( DNA replication, transcription, and translation). Some familiarity with molecular biology techniques like PCR, ELISA, etc.
Basic understanding of fundamental statistical concepts such as mean, variation, standard deviation, and familiarity with concepts like confidence intervals, P-value, and hypothesis testing.
Able to perform literature reviews of research papers using scientific databases like PubMed, Google Scholar and basic proficiency in Microsoft Powerpoint ( to present data and assignments) and Microsoft Word.
